Designing dashboards for people under pressure

PUBLISHED · SEP 2026 · 5 MIN READ

Interface lessons from live oil-field and logistics operations — when the reading is the mission, latency is the enemy and decoration is noise.

SYS.01 — THE READING IS THE MISSION

Operators on an oil field or a loading dock are not browsing; they are reading instruments under time pressure. Every decorative choice is a tax on the half-second they have to find the number that matters. Latency is not a performance metric here — it is a safety property.

SYS.02 — STATE, MADE VISIBLE

Live operational data has to announce its own freshness. A reading without a timestamp is a rumour. So every panel carries when it was last updated, and every stale value changes appearance before it lies. The interface states its state.

SYS.03 — WHAT I KEPT OUT

No animation for its own sake, no charts that need a tooltip to be understood, no colour used as decoration. Colour is a channel: it means good, degraded, or stop.
