Low-bandwidth first: shipping for market realities

PUBLISHED · JUN 2026 · 5 MIN READ

Aggressive code-splitting, tree-shaking and lazy loading — built for Accra networks, better for everyone. Lessons from merchant payments across Africa.

SYS.01 — DESIGN FOR THE NETWORK YOU HAVE

Merchant payments across Africa do not run on office fibre. They run on mobile data, on shared connections, on phones that are three models old. Building for that reality first is not a compromise; it is the correct default.

SYS.02 — SPLIT, SHAKE, DEFER

Aggressive code-splitting, tree-shaking and lazy loading cut the bytes that must arrive before the first useful pixel. The win was measured on low-bandwidth connections — but everyone got it. Performance work aimed at the worst case improves the best case too.

SYS.03 — WHAT I KEPT OUT

No above-the-fold carousels, no third-party scripts loaded before the page is usable, no assuming a fast connection and apologising later.
